Trauma Informed Care in Churches:
Loving the traumatized person in front of you AND Training your congregants to do the same
Most every person you will encounter has experienced some level of trauma in her life and it is important as people of God to learn to recognize that and learn to respond appropriately, AND teach those with whom we work and minister to do the same. Trauma does not look the same in all cases and the way in which people respond to trauma does not look the same. I will talk with you about how to encounter each person with whom you work as a person who has his own story who deserves to be heard. I will also address the need for education in congregations. I will give you permission to work within your own skill set and then refer out when you are not comfortable doing the work with a person that needs to be done. Finally, I will encourage you to recognize your own traumas in life and in ministry, and get the help you need.
